MY GRANDMOTHER
My Grandmother and I were good friends. My parents left me with her when they went to live in the city and we were constantly together. She used to wake me up in the morning and get me ready for school. She said her morning prayer in a monotonous singsong while she bathed and dressed me in the hope that I would listen and get to know it by heart ; I listened because loved her voice but never bothered to learn it. Then she would fetch my wooden slate which she had already washed and plastered with yellow chalk, a tiny earthen ink-pot and a reed pen, tie them all in a bundle and hand it to me. After a breakfast of a thick, stale chapatti with a little butter and sugar spread on it, we went to school. She carried several stale chapattis with her for the village dogs.
My grandmother always went to school with me because the school was attached to the temple. The priest taught us the alphabet and the morning prayer. While the children sat in

THE DAFFODILS
I wandered lonely as cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host of golden daffodils ;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle in the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay :
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their head in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them dance ; but they
Outdid the sparkling waves in glee :
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company ;
I gazed-and gazed-but little thought
What wealth the show to show me had brought.
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon the inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude ;
And then my heart with pleasure fills
And dances with the daffodils.

SYMPATHY
I lay in sorrow, deep distressed:
My grief a proud man heard;
His looks were cold, he gave me gold
But not a kindly word,
My sorrow passed-I paid him back
The gold he gave to me;
Then stood erect and spoke my thanks
And blessed his Charity.
I lay in want, in grief and pain:
A poor man passed my way;
He bound my head, he gave me bread
He watched the night and day.
How shall I pay him back again,
For all he did to me?
Oh, gold is great, but greater far
Is heavenly Sympathy !
