New Nokia Lumia 625 best and cheapest phone in Lumia Range 2013 to 2014.

Nokia Lumia 625 is coming to market with a 4.7 inch 480 x 800 resolution screen (WVGA) with a 201ppi pixel density. The glass is enhanced for better viewing under the sun. A dual-core 1.2GHz processor drives the handset. 512MB of RAM is onboard and there is 8GB of native storage which can be expanded by as much as 64GB using the microSD slot. The rear-facing 5MP snapper can capture video in 1080p @ 30fps while there is a VGA front-facing camera. A 2000mAh battery keeps the lights on.

The rumors were true. Nokia's revealed its biggest phone to date, with a screen measuring in at 4.7 inches. It's the Lumia 625, and it joins a series that has grown a fair bit since the Lumia 620 launched earlier this year. Compared to that earlier phone, the 625 keeps the same resolution (a slightly pixelated 800 x 480), but bumps the processing power up to a dual-core Snapdragon S4. Despite that hulking LCD screen, however, it's still thinner than the Lumia 920 at 9.15mm (0.36 inches). It's a Nokia smartphone, so there are plenty of HSPA radio gadgetry to keep the global fanbase happy. What's more -- and this is rare for an entry-level Lumia -- it also has LTE. Specifically, we're looking at the British EE-friendly Band 3 option here, alongside Bands 7 and 10.

    Summary
The Xolo Q600 may boast of a quad-core processor and an inexpensive price-tag but it does not excel in its segment, especially when compared to other Android smartphones like the Xolo Q700 and the Karbonn S5 Titanium. We recommend you look at the competition instead of this Xolo smartphone.
    REVIEW
Xolo, as a brand, has been doing some impressive things in the budget and mid-range segments with its portfolio of Android smartphones. In segments where build quality and design are pushed to the back for pure hardware numbers, Xolo phones stand out for not only being great performers but also not compromising on build quality and looks. That’s perhaps the main the reason I felt a little disappointed when I got my first look at the Xolo Q600. The phone has a glossy plastic body and a poor looking display and does not make the best first impression.

    Features

The Xolo Q600’s hardware is a mixed bag. On one hand, you have its quad-core 1.2GHz MediaTek 6589 processor that’s great for a smartphone under Rs. 10,000, but on the other you also only get 512MB of RAM, a number that’s on the brink of being  insufficient for many apps. The Xolo also has a decent sized display at 4.5-inches but with the low resolution of 854x480 pixels. Of course, you can’t really expect too much from a budget phone and one that costs as little as the Q600 but the truth is that there are other phones at similar price-points that offer more, such as the Xolo Q700 and the Karbonn S5 Titanium.

To get a better look at how the Xolo Q600 compares with some its competitors, have a look at our comparison table.

On the software side of things, the Xolo Q600 doesn’t have many extra applications pre-installed on it but that’s alright because the Play Store has more than enough apps to fill that void. There are however, three tools on the Q600 that you won’t find on non-Xolo handsets. These are- Xolo Power, Xolo Secure and Xolo Care. Xolo Care is an app that gives quick access to Xolo’s customer care service and software updates for the phone. Xolo Power is a nice little tool that helps you make best use of the battery on the Q600 by letting the app control certain things like Internet connectivity or screen brightness to conserve battery life. Xolo Secure is another cool app that helps you secure the phone and your data by letting you track and control your phone remotely and by backing up your data to the cloud.

The Q600 comes pre-installed with Xolo Care, Xolo Power & Xolo Secure apps.

    Design & Usability

The best thing I can say about the Xolo Q600’s looks is that it’s available in white, a respite from the usual sea of black and grey smartphones. Apart from that, the Q600 is an ordinary looking device and a throwback to older Android smartphones, considering that it is quite fat and relies heavily on glossy plastic. In spite of that, the phone is built well and I had no issues with its build quality.

The Xolo Q600 has a glossy plastic body.

Another disappointing aspect of the Q600 is its low-resolution display. For a screen that’s 4.5-inches in size, a resolution of 854x480 pixels is low. As a result, the Q600’s display has poor viewing angles, handles sunlight badly and is overall really average. Even our high quality HD test videos didn’t look all that good on the Q600’s display and the text in ebooks look jagged. On the other hand, the display is really bright and tends to oversaturate colours, so you’ll like it if vibrancy is what you’re looking for from a phone’s display.

The Xolo Q600 is not a slim smartphone.

The Q600 uses the standard Android 4.2.1 (Jelly Bean) interface which means that if you’ve used an Android phone before, you’ll have no problems with the Q600. As is the case with Android, the interface is clean and well-designed. The Q600 offers accurate touch input and as a result, I didn’t face any issues using the phone.

    Performance

In spite of its low amount of RAM, the Xolo Q600 performed surprisingly well when it came to synthetic benchmarks. To get a better understanding of the Q600’s scores as compared with some competing phones, check out the table below.

Antutu Quadrant Standard Smartbench 2012 (Productivity)
    Xolo Q600 13948 3974 3771
     Xolo Q700 13677 3787 3745
     Karbonn S5 Titanium 9178 4564 3746
     Zen Ultrafone 701HD 12627 4084 3353

However, we’ve learnt not to rely on synthetic benchmarks especially with Samsung doing god knows what to screw around with those numbers. In terms of real world performance, the Xolo does well for the most part. It ran popular games like Dead Trigger without any issues but I did notice the browser stutter and slow down when I opened more than ten tabs. This is mainly because of the low amount of RAM in the phone and although you may not notice any massive issues at present, the 512MB of RAM will be a liability in the future as apps get heavier and command more system resources.

In our continuous video playback test, with full brightness, the phone lasted for a little over six hours. This is very good and translates to more than a day of use on a single charge. The call quality of the Q600 was disappointing with some echoing during voice calls and also voices sounding too thin.

The Xolo Q600's 2000mAh battery helps it easily last more than a day of regular use.

Overall, the Xolo Q600 performs better than what its hardware suggests but I still have reservations about how it will perform six to eight months down the line.

    Imaging and Multimedia

The Xolo Q600’s 5MP camera works surprisingly well as a casual shooter and nothing more. Images we shot with the Q500 had low levels of noise and decent clarity. The images do tend to look a little dull but that’s to be expected at this budget. The images don’t lose too much fidelity under low-light either. The videos recorded by the Q600 camera played smoothly but didn’t look great. Contrast levels were off by a lot in the videos with shadows looking overly dark and the brighter areas looking overexposed. The Q600 wasn’t able to record audio well either.

Photos shot outdoors with the Xolo Q600 (click on images to enlarge in new window).

Photos shot indoors under different lighting conditions with the Xolo Q600 (click on images to enlarge in new window).

At this budget, the Xolo Q600 makes for a decent proposition if you want to use it exclusively as a quick cameraphone for casual shots. Just don’t expect too much from it.

Like other Android smartphones, the Xolo Q600 works well as a media player for all your movies, videos and music. The Q600 had no problems playing our SD test videos but it had some playback, audio issues when we threw 720p MKV videos into the mix. Considering the quality of the Q600’s display, you wouldn’t really want to watch movies on it, anyway. The quality of audio playback was fine but I did notice that the volume output through earphones was quite low. Even at max volume, our test audio files didn’t sound very loud.

If you were looking at the Xolo Q600 to be a powerful multimedia device, I would suggest you look at other phones.

    Bottomline

Even though the Xolo Q600 scores well in synthetic benchmarks, is inexpensive at Rs. 8,999 and has a quad-core processor, there’s really no good reason to recommend it especially considering you get better phones at around the same price. You could look at the Xolo Q700 that costs about Rs. 500 more and you’ll get a better display and more RAM. You could also look at the Nokia Lumia 520 for Rs. 9,300 if you aren’t a stickler for Android and you’ll get a phone with much more style. If you are willing to stretch your budget by a little, you could also consider the Karbonn S5 Titanium and the Zen Ultrafone 701HD, both phones that combine great performance with usability.

On it’s own, the Xolo Q600 does many things right and is a good phone. But considering its competition, and its weaknesses (the biggest of which are its low RAM and sub-par display), I can’t recommend it.

Micromax Canvas 4 review and price details with product specification

Micromax finally lifted the curtains from its much-awaited Canvas 4 smartphone. We spent some time with the device. Here are our first impressions of the features the smartphone brings to the table.
Micromax today announced the Canvas 4 smartphone. The device will be available to consumers this weekend for Rs. 17,999. We had some hands on time with the Canvas 4 at the launch event. Here are our first impressions of the smartphone.

The specifications of the Micromax Canvas 4 are pretty much what we expected of the device. It has a 5-inch IPS display with a 1280x720 pixel resolution. It is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core CPU, 1GB of RAM and supports 16GB of built-in storage. You can add an additional 32GB of storage via a microSD card. The rear of the smartphone has a 13MP camera and the front has a 5MP camera. A 2000mAh battery powers the entire package. Straight out-of-the-box, the smartphone runs on Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean. The smartphone boasts of dual-SIM capabilities.

One of the biggest problems with budget smartphones is that they don’t offer an OTA update feature. Micromax says it has addressed this problem with the Canvas 4, which has the ability to receive updates over the air.
Coming to the build of the Canvas 4, we it has changed from its predecessor, the Canvas HD, but not very dramatically. The face of the smartphone looks just like the Canvas HD, while the side of the smartphone has an aluminium finish very reminiscent of the iPhone 4. The rear panel has a plastic finish and at the event, there were two colours on display – white and dark grey. The white one looked a little cheap compared to the dark grey one. The device is still a fingerprint magnet. In terms of the connectivity options, we have the volume rocker to the left, the right has the power button, the top has the headphones jack and the bottom has the microUSB port – fairly standard.

Okay, so the Canvas 4’s hardware hasn’t been upgraded much when compared to the Canvas HD, but Micromax has added a slew of features to the smartphone to justify the Rs. 18,000 price point. To start with, you can blow on the display or shake the phone to unlock it. Before you ask, yes, this feature works. We tried it at the launch event. It looks quite odd, as though you are about to kiss the smartphone but it works nonetheless. Another addition to the functionality of the phone is that you will be able to use the touchscreen while wearing gloves. Whether this works as well as it did on the Lumia 920 is something we will comment on once we have the smartphone in for review.
Apart from adding a number of filters to the Canvas 4’s camera, a few nifty features have been added. You have the usual array of shooting modes and panorama. An interesting thing is that you not only have access to horizontal, but vertical panorama as well. You also have a burst mode with the ability to click 99 images.
One feature that we really liked on Samsung smartphones is the ability to watch a video in “pop out” mode on the display and continue working in the background. This feature has been brought to the Micromax Canvas 4. You can continue watching a video in a small window and check your mail, sent a text or browse the Internet in the background.

Speaking about added features to the regular video playback capabilities, one of the features that NEVER worked for me on the Samsung Galaxy S4 was Smart Pause. Why? Because I wear glasses and the smartphone apparently couldn’t detect my eyes – a frustrating experience. The Canvas 4 has brought this “Smart Pause” feature and I have to say at the event, it worked quite well for me. Every time I looked away from the smartphone, the video would pause. The final verdict of this feature will be given once we have the smartphone in our hands for review.
In the Canvas 4’s gallery app, you also have the ability to watch a preview of the video when it is in a thumbnail. No need to wave your finger of the display to see the video as you do on the S4. The thumbnail gives you a playback of the video as and when the thumbnail is on the display.
While watching a video on Canvas 4, you have access to the brightness as well as volume controls on the display itself. Just swipe your finger on the display and you can control the brightness as well as the volume.
You also have access to a bunch of gesture controls on the Canvas 4. To start with, you can simply flip the phone on its face if you don’t want to attend a call. Flipping it over during the call switches on the loud speaker. Putting the phone to your ear when a contact is open on the display dials that contact. We have seen these gesture controls before and it is nice to see Micromax implement them on the Canvas 4.
Apart from access to the Google Play store, you have access to a lot of Micromax content such as the M! Zone+, M!Live, gaming hub and more.

So, yes, the hardware of the smartphone isn’t really a revolution in the budget space, as we were expecting from the Canvas 4. Does this justify the 18,000-price point? We aren’t sure, but as of now the Canvas 4 feels like old wine in a new bottle. How this fares in the market is something we will comment on once we have reviewed the smartphone.
Just to put things into perspective regarding the specifications of the smartphone, here is a quick specs comparison between the Canvas 4, Karbonn Smart Titanium S9, Samsung Galaxy Grand Quattro and the Xolo X1000.

Smart Namo, the Narendra Modi branded Android phone with price details and product specification.

Smart Namo, the Narendra Modi branded Android phone.
Gujarat chief minister NarendraModi will soon get a smartphone dedicated to him. Smart Namo, an independent body formed by Modi fans, has announced it will soon launch a mobile phone by the same name. The upcoming Android phone is the group members' way of showing their dedication and respect to Modi, the official website for the device says.

According to the website, Namo is an acronym for Narendra Modi as well as Next-generation Android Mobile Odyssey. Modi is popularly referred to as NaMo on social networking websites. Apart from launching the standard version of the device, the group has already starting working on the "Shri Narendra Modi signature edition" handset.

The Smart Namo group includes Gujarati businessmen who have a mobile business in China. Ammeet Desai, the spokesperson for Smart Namo told The Wall Street Journal that they got the idea for this phone from China itself, where several products like MP3 players and smartphones are sold with branding of the leaders.

The group's members will design the phone over the next month and go to Modi for his approval, the report says. Desai said that the group will establish a production plant to manufacture the handsets in Gujarat.

While it does not give a time line for the launch of the device, the group says it will launch the smartphone "very soon." The report claims that Smart Namo phone will cost Rs 16,000 at launch and have videos as well as apps related to Modi. The group will be selling the phone at cost, thus making no profit from it. Cheaper versions of the device are also in the pipeline, including a feature phone that will cost Rs 1,000.

Coming to the specs of the phone, the Smart Namo website says that the phone will have a 5-inch screen, reinforced with Corning Gorilla Glass 2. It will run on a 1.5GHz quad-core Mediatek chipset that supports dual-sim functionality and have a 13MP camera on the back. The phone will be available in four variants, as per storage and RAM.
    Specification:
    Size:5-inch screen

    Processor:1.5GHz quad-core Mediatek chipset
    Camera:13MP camera on the back
