India vs England 2012: Pune T20I - Preview

Pune: India need to put behind the humiliation of losing the Test rubber against England and regroup quickly to take on the confident visitors in the first of the two T20 Internationals here from Thursday.

Under-fire for the first Test series loss to England in 28 years and and with his captaincy under the scanner, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni will have to put these issues on the back burner and motivate his teammates for the shortest format of the game.

To the home team's advantage, a younger lot of players some of who were not part of the Test series like flamboyant all rounder Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma and Ambati Rayudu would give India the much-needed edge and enthusiasm.

All three are very good T20 players and would also bring the extra zip and verve in the fielding department which was absent in the Tests.

They have all been busy playing in the Ranji Trophy for their respective units and will be match fit too.

Incidentally Sharma, who has been in good form with the bat in the Ranji Trophy recently, had top-scored with an unbeaten 55 when the two teams last met in a T20 game, won by India by a whopping margin of 90 runs in Sri Lanka earlier this year during the ICC T20 World Cup.

Yuvraj Singh, who flopped in the Test series barring a fighting 74 in the opener at Ahmedabad, is back to the format in which he has excelled in the past.

Dashing opener Virender Sehwag has opted out of the two-match series, which ends with the last match at Mumbai on December 22, and it has given the chance to Ajinkya Rahane, who warmed the bench right through the Test series, to open the innings with Gautam Gambhir.

Rahane had impressed with a 61 when the two teams met in a T20 game last year in England at Manchester and would be eager to get going after playing Ranji Trophy games for Mumbai.

Dhoni, himself a superb T20 and 50-over batsman, would be the late-order game changer, and with Virat Kohli, who had rediscovered his wonted touch with a patient 103 in the last Test at Nagpur, will give extra impetus in the batting and fielding sections.

The new ball bowling has a fresh look to it in the form of Ashok Dinda, Abhimanyu Mithun , Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Parwinder Awana with veteran Zaheer Khan opting out.

Dinda and Awana had been part of the Test squad in the latter stages but did not get a game while Mithun has been added as a replacement for his injured Karnataka teammate, R Vinay Kumar.

Spin bowling department will be manned by R Ashwin, who would be extra keen to impress after a disappointing show with the ball in the Test rubber, Ravindra Jadeja, who made his Test debut at Nagpur, and Piyush Chawla, who too was part of the team in the drawn final game.

England have made wholesale changes in their squad with triumphant Test skipper Alastair Cook returning home and replaced at the helm by hard-hitting middle order batsman Eoin Morgan who was part of the Test team but did not play a single game.

Morgan is also the stand-in captain for the injured Stuart Broad, replaced by James Harris, who has returned home along with many other members of the team, notably Kevin Pietersen.

The absence of Pietersen, who played a big role in England winning the Test rubber, would be welcomed by India. The star batsman is no longer part of the England Twenty20 team.

England have included T20 specialists like Alex Hales, Jos Butler, Jade Dernbach, James Tredwell, Michael Lumb, Luke Wright and Danny Briggs.

some of who have been part of the development squad which played a few matches in Navi Mumbai when the Test matches were on.

Retained from the Test squad along with captain Morgan are Tim Bresnan, wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow, Samit Patel and Joe Root, who made an impressive Test debut in the final match.

Bresnan and Patel also had the opportunity to play in two and three Tests while Morgan and Bairstow did not.

India have lost three T20 games, all in bilateral series, between the two sides. They had lost bilateral matches played at Lord's in June 2009 and the next two held at Manchester and Kolkata in August and October last year.

The game here would be the first T20 International played at the swanky Sahara Stadium on the city's outskirts which hosted IPL matches last year. It has a capacity of 43,000.

Teams:

India: Mahendra Sing Dhoni (capt), Gautam Gambhir, Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Ambati Rayudu, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Piyush Chawla, Ashok Dinda, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Abhimanyu Mithun and Parvinder Awana.

England: Eoin Morgan (capt), James Harris, Jonny Bairstow, Tim Bresnan, Danny Briggs, Jos Butler, Jade Dernbach, Alex Hales, Michael Lumb, Stuart Meaker, Samit Patel, Joe Root, James Tredwell and Luke Wright.

Umpires: C Shamsuddin, Sudhur Asnani

Home News Exclusive Schedule/Results Top Performer Debate Blog Poll Trivia Pic Gallery Under-fire Dhoni lodges complaint with BCCI against Gambhir

New Delhi: Under fire after back-to-back defeats in the home series against England, Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is unhappy with Gautam Gambhir's "attitude and on-field ethics" and has lodged a complaint to the BCCI against the left-hander, a media report claimed on Wednesday.

Dhoni feels that Gambhir puts his interest above the team and has become too self-centred. The Indian captain has gone to the extent of lodging a complaint to the BCCI tagging the opener's approach as "selfish" and "hurtful to the team", 'cricketnext' website reported, quoting an Indian player who pleaded anonymity.

"Of late Gambhir has gone into a shell and focusing on just to save his place in the team. His prolonged poor form has resulted in low self-esteem and he's cut off from other issues pertaining to the team," the player was quoted as saying.

"But what irked Dhoni was Gambhir playing for himself and not for the team. It was evident in the way Gambhir batted in the second innings of the Mumbai Test that he was more interested in carrying his bat by remaining not out, rather than shielding the tailenders and scoring quick runs.

"...Every run was crucial but Gambhir chose to be a mute spectator. The whole world saw that and everyone was taken aback. The effort to contribute to the team wasn't there. Look how well R Ashwin batted with maturity during his unbeaten 91 in the Kolkata Test and he isn't a specialist batsman. He shepherded the tailenders superbly and scored vital runs. If Ashwin can do, why couldn't Gambhir?" the player said.

While assuaging thoughts of any bad blood between Dhoni and Gambhir, the report cited the run-outs of Virender Sehwag in the first innings of the Kolkata Test and Cheteshwar Pujara in the second as moments which precipitated India's downfall and left Dhoni miffed with Gambhir's current approach.

"On both occasions, Gambhir was at fault. While there were clearly three runs in Sehwag's case which Gambhir declined, the call for a run to Pujara was ill-judged. He was having a tough time against Steven Finn and wanted to get off the strike. His desperation cost Pujara his wicket. Dhoni doesn't have doubts about his integrity or commitment," the player said.

Gambhir's attitude has not gone down well with Dhoni, who is determined to win the Nagpur Test and level the series, and he conveyed his thoughts to the BCCI officials in no uncertain terms, the report claimed.

The website report said one of the BCCI officials will speak to Gambhir before the match and the matter will be sorted out. "It is important that all the members take the field in the last Test with the motto of giving their best shot," he concluded.

A source close to Gambhir asserted that though the opener hasn't performed to the potential in this series, Dhoni was playing gimmicks to undermine Gambhir.

"Dhoni's captaincy is under fire. He's being censured by one and all. His place in the Test team is questioned; his defensive and unimaginative mindset as a captain is unmasked, so he's trying to pass the buck and blame others - whether his batsmen, spinners, Sehwag and now Gambhir - to save his face," the website said, quoting the source.

"He (Dhoni) sees Gambhir as a potential threat to his captaincy and wants to undermine him. Mohinder Amarnath has tipped Gambhir to take over the captaincy from Dhoni and proclaimed that Dhoni uses his clout in the BCCI to push his agenda. He thinks that he can dictate terms in every matter...", the report added.

Broad out of Nagpur Test; Finn doubtful

Broad out of Nagpur Test; Finn doubtful

Nagpur: England fast bowler Stuart Broad has been ruled out of the 4th and final Test between India and England due to a bruised heel.

Broad, who is England’s T20 skipper, has also become doubtful for the subsequent T20 matches between the two nations.

Board first had a scan on his injury during England`s second tour match in Mumbai last month, but he went on to play in the first two Tests before being dropped.

If Board fails to recover in time, England would also have to name a new captain for the slam-bang format. Eoin Morgan is most likely to replace him.

The two T20 matches are scheduled to take place in Pune and Mumbai on December 20 and 22, respectively.

According to the sources from the English camp, fast bowler Steve Finn, who replaced Broad in the Kolkata Test, is also a doubtful starter for the Nagpur Test.

Time has come for Sachin Tendulkar to retire: Amarnath, Vengsarkar

Time has come for Sachin Tendulkar to retire: Amarnath, Vengsarkar

www.cricketraaz.blogspot.com
New Delhi: Former India cricketer and member of selection committee Mohinder Amarnath has said that Sachin Tendulkar should quit international cricket as he no longer can play the way he used to in the past.

"Sachin is a great cricketer. He has been playing for many years. Now he cannot play the way he was playing earlier. The time comes for everybody," he was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar echoed Amarnath’s view saying Tendulkar cannot dominate the bowlers with the same ruthlessness when he was young.

"Sachin is a fantastic cricketer. He has contributed a lot for Indian cricket. However, he is now 39 years old. He will continue scoring runs, but not with the same speed. He will not dominate as he used to in the past," he was quoted as saying.

Tendulkar is under severe criticism for his failure to score runs in the past one year leading to suggestions that he should take retirement from international cricket.

Amarnath also raised questions over MS Dhoni;s performance saying he hasn’t done anything in recent memory that justifies his continuation as the Test skipper.

"Dhoni doesn't find a place in the team. What has he done for the team in the last one year? The selection committee does not have guts to remove Dhoni," he said.

Bangladesh vs West Indies 2nd Test: Live Score

West Indies Over: 60 II Score: 172/2 (Darren Bravo: 55*, Samuels: 72*)

Darren Bravo and Marlon Samuels have both scored half centuries and are playing the Bangladesh bowlers around with ease. Bangladesh are slowly but surely losing the plot here. Singles are coming all too easily for the batsmen hence no pressure is being built on them.

West Indies Over: 51 II Score: 146/2 (Darren Bravo: 41*, Samuels: 62*)

Tea has been called for and West Indies are in a comfortable position as they go into tea. They recovered well after the loss of Gayle and Powell to reach 146/2. This session belonged to the West Indies. They will look to build on this partnership even further after tea and achieve a big first innings lead over the hosts.

West Indies Over: 45 II Score: 122/2 (Darren Bravo: 37*, Samuels: 43*)

West Indies are going along very comfortably. A big partnership looks to be in store for the Windies.

West Indies Over: 40 II Score: 113/2 (Darren Bravo: 32*, Samuels: 39*)

West Indies are cruising alomg at the moment. Bangladesh bowlers are looking very ordinary.

West Indies Over: 35 II Score: 96/2 (Darren Bravo: 28*, Samuels: 26*)

West Indies are consolidating well after a few quick wickets in the first session. Bravo and Samuels are looking very comfortable in the middle now and look set for a huge partnership. Bangladesh need to do something different.

West Indies Over: 30 II Score: 80/2 (Darren Bravo: 21*, Samuels: 20*)

West Indies are building up a good partnership here. Samuels is looking uncomfortable against the angle created by the left handed Shakib.
West Indies Over: 25 II Score: 71/2 (Darren Bravo: 17*, Samuels: 15*)

West Indies have begun the post lunch session very cautiously. They are not looking to play too many shots. Abul Hasan and Shakib bowling in tandem.

LUNCH REPORT

At Lunch West indies were 62 for the loss of 2 wickets. Bangladesh were folded out early in the 2nd day for a score of 387 all out. West Indies started out very positively with the bat, scoring runs at a very brisk pace. The hosts however pulled it back with the wickets of Powell and Gayle. Rubel Hossain and Sohag Gazi picked up a wicket each. Bangladesh would be a satisfied unit as they go into lunch and will be looking to continue their good performance in the post lunch session as well.

West Indies Over: 20 II Score: 59/2 (Darren Bravo: 10*, Samuels: 10*)

Bangladesh are putting a lot of pressure on the West Indies batsmen. The spinners are inviting them to go over the top and the Windies are hitting a few shots in the air.

West Indies Over: 15 II Score: 43/2 (Darren Bravo: 4*, Samuels: 0*)

Bangladesh have got the big wicket of Gayle. Marlon Samuels replaces him in the crease. Runs are not coming easily for the Windies.

CH Gayle c Mushfiqur Rahim b Sohag Gazi 25 (47b 3x4 0x6)

West Indies Over: 10 II Score: 37/1 (Gayle: 23*, Darren Bravo: 0*)

Bangladesh have picked up a wicket. Powell pulls a short one from Rubel Hossain straight to the man at deep square leg. Darren Bravo replaces Powell in the middle. Bangladesh have put a hold on the scoring rate and will be looking to keep up the pressure.

KOA Powell c Shakib Al Hasan b Rubel Hossain 13 (22b 2x4 0x6)

West Indies Over: 5 II Score: 28/0 (Gayle: 21*, Powell: 6*)

Chris Gayle and Kieran Powell will open the batting for the West Indies and Sohag Gazi will bowl the first over for the hosts.

The Windies openers are looking good and scoring at a good rate. The Hosts have not put any kind of pressure on the batsmen. They are getting runs at will and at a good rate.
BANGLADESH Over: 91.1 II Score: 387/10

Abul Hasan scored 113 runs with 14 boundaries and 4 sixes to take Bangladesh to a respectable 387 all out. Bangladesh will be satisfied with their performance in the first innings although the lower order provided no resistance at all. Now it is time for the bowlers to put ion a good show and restrict the Windies batsmen from taking a huge first innings lead.

Dhaka: Bowler Abul Hasan hit an unbeaten century on his debut to propel Bangladesh to 365-8 at stumps on Wednesday on the first day of the second test against West Indies.

Bangladesh will be looking to add some more runs to their score so they can put pressure on the Windies batsmen when they come out to bat some time in the second day.

2-0 Test win against England can put India in third place

2-0 Test win against England can put India in third place

New Delhi : India can jump two places to the third spot in Test rankings if they beat England 2-0 in the four-match Test series starting Nov 15 in Ahmedabad.
England are also in their pursuit of first Test series win in India since 1984-85. But besides aiming to end the 27-year wait for success in India, England are also targeting at getting back the number one spot in the Reliance ICC Test Championship table, just a few months after losing the top spot to South Africa.
England have to beat the hosts by 3-0 or even bigger margin in the series starting Thursday at Ahemedabad.
However, England’s return to the top will be dependent on some help from rival Australia, who take on South Africa in a series that began Friday in Brisbane.
If Australia win against South Africa by a margin of 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1, then it would become the No. 1 team. But England could displace Australia from the top if it were then to beat India by a margin of 3-0 or 4-0.
Similarly, if the Australia-South Africa series is drawn level at 0-0 or 1-1, it would see Graeme Smith’s side retaining the number-one spot. If this were to happen, England could displace South Africa if it were then to beat India by a margin of 3-0 or 4-0.

pragyan Ojha, Cheteshwar Pujara on the rise in ICC Test rankings

Indian left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha, who starred with a nine-wicket haul in the first Test against England, rose nine places to break into the top-five of the latest ICC rankings issued here on Monday.

The 26-year-old recorded match figures of 77.2-24-165-9 in the game India won by nine wickets in Ahmedabad to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series.

The other Indian in the top-20 are pace spearhead Zaheer Khan (up one place to 14th and off-spinner R Ashwin (steady at 18th).

Not a single Indian features in the top-20 of ICC`s batting chart but Cheteshwar Pujara, who struck a doubled hundred in the Ahmedabad Test, has rocketed 35 places to the 24th position.

England captain Alastair Cook, who scored a gutsy 176 in his side`s second innings, has returned to the top 10 by rising four places to seventh.

Matt Prior, on the other hand, has become the fifth England batsman inside the top 20 after achieving a career-best ranking of 18th.

Indian opener Virender Sehwag is now in 22nd position after gaining one place following his 23rd Test century.

India vs England 2012: Alastair Cook leads fightback, visitors wipe off deficit

Ahmedabad: Captain Alastair Cook led a remarkable England fightback with a heroic unbeaten 168 as the defiant visitors wiped out India`s mammoth first innings lead with a gritty batting display to raise hopes of saving the first cricket Test here on Sunday.

DAY 4:

The 27-year-old Cook displayed immense concentration and skill to not only notch up his 21st Test century under pressure but also keep his team in the game as he steered England to 340 for five at close on the penultimate day which saw the Sardar Patel track ease out quite a bit.

The England captain found an able ally in Matt Prior (84) as the duo put on an unfinished 141-run partnership to leave the Indians frustrated.

The spinners, who were expected to do the bulk of the damage, found it difficult to get the wickets.

England, who conceded a mammoth 330-run first innings lead and were asked to follow-on, have now taken a lead of 10 runs, setting the stage for an interesting fifth day`s play tomorrow with all three results possible.

India will look to claim the remaining five wickets as quickly as possible tomorrow and push for a 1-0 lead in the four-match series.

England, on the other hand, will try to bat as much as possible and may even put pressure on India by taking a substantial lead on a tricky fifth day track.

Resuming at the overnight score of 111 for no loss, England lost the wickets of Nick Compton (37), Jonathan Trott (17), Kevin Pietersen (2), Ian Bell (22) and Samit Patel (0) but it was Cook who stood like a rock to hold the English innings together showing superb endurance.

Cook batted the whole day with exemplary patience, determination and composure to remain unconquered.

Cook, who has faced 341 balls and struck 20 fours, was given splendid support by Prior, who was not out on 84 that came off 190 balls and contained 10 fours.

The duo batted resolutely even as Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni constantly shuffled his bowling attack that lacked the bite of the first innings.

India can still come back strongly with a few quick blows tomorrow morning and press for victory on a track which is offering slow turn.

But the day belonged entirely to Cook after a couple of quick blows by left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha and wickets off successive balls by pacer Umesh Yadav on either side of lunch. Prior, on the other hand, played the ideal foil to his captain.

It was the sixth 150-plus score by Cook who had scored a century on debut in Nagpur in 2006. His other three-figure effort against India (294) was made at Edgbaston in the last series between the two teams in 2011.

Cook also became the eighth English batsman to score more than one hundred on Indian soil, by joining the ranks of Ken Barrington (3), Andrew Strauss (3), Colin Cowdrey (2), Tony Greig (2), Mike Gatting (2), Ian Botham (2) and Paul Collingwood (2).

The Indian bowlers toiled hard throughout the day against the resolute England skipper and, after lunch, against his more aggressive partner Prior without success.

Cook`s composure and patience was creditable right through and he hardly played a false shot.

While Ojha was easily the more impressive of the two Indian spinners, getting some bite with his flighted deliveries, Ashwin bowled mostly flat through the air but was also guilty of not maintaining a tight line outside the off.

Ojha ended the day with figures of 2 for 102 in 44 overs to add to his 5-45 of the first innings while Ashwin, who got three in the first innings, went wicket-less in his 41 overs in which he gave away 104 runs.

Yadav, another successful bowler of the day, had 2 for 60 in 19 overs. Zaheer Khan bowled economically, giving away 38 runs in 18 overs for the wicket of opener Nick Compton in the first session.

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni brought on Yuvraj Singh to bowl his first over in the England second innings after 10l overs without success in breaking the sixth wicket partnership.

In the second session, Yadav struck two body blows by making the ball reverse swing to trap Ian Bell (22) and Samit Patel (0) leg before wicket off the fifth and sixth balls of his first over of a new spell to leave the tourists gasping at 199 for 5 in the first hour.

Ojha had done similar damage in the first session by dismissing Jonathan Trott (17) and Kevin Pietersen (2) within a space of seven balls spread over two overs to push England on the back foot after Cook and Nick Compton (37) had put on a stand of 123 runs.

These four batsmen's dismissal by Ojha and Yadav on either side of lunch, in the space of 20 overs and for the addition of only 45 runs, pushed England firmly on the back foot.

But Cook stood tall with his reach, excellent technique and calm demeanour against the spinning ball as he cracked his third century against India and the 21st in his 84th game.

Cook, who made 41 in the first essay, and Prior prevented further damage till close to renew the battle on Monday.

Prior edged Ojha once but the catch fell short of a diving Virender Sehwag at slip while Cook's edge also fell short once off Ashwin. But otherwise they batted without much trouble.

Dhoni took the second new ball in the 83rd over when England were 219 for 5 just before the end of the first hour in which the visitors added 42 runs in 14 over for the loss Bell and Patel.

Earlier, in the first session, some tight bowling by Zaheer Khan and Ojha kept them down to 71 runs from 31 overs for the loss of Compton, Trott (17) and Pietersen (2), the opener falling to Zaheer and the last two to Ojha.

Senior pacer Zaheer Khan gave the initial breakthrough after 28 minutes into the fourth morning by dismissing debutant opener Nick Compton, who had a charmed life, for 37.

Compton was lucky not to be declared out when he was rapped in front by Ashwin and then survived a clear stumping chance off the same bowler before he fell to Zaheer.

Cook and Bell, who was out first ball to Ojha in the first innings when he charged out to the bowler, prevented further damage after the fall of Trott and Pietersen in quick succession.

Compton, 34 last evening, was lucky to escape a leg before appeal off Ashwin, umpire Aleem Dar turning down the vociferous shout from the Indians.

The right handed debutant was again fortunate when on 36, wicketkeeper Dhoni missed an easy stumping chance off Ashwin who drew him well out of the crease.

However, his luck did not hold out for long as after the addition of one more run he was trapped leg before by Zaheer when he played across.
