How to create a strong password for social media to not get hacked.

There are a number of ways to secure access to online services, but the humble password remains both the strongest – and weakest – link in the chain, whether you’re using a smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop PC. Weak passwords can be cracked in a variety of ways, from “brute force” dictionary attacks to simple guess work.

It’s incredible to think that many people still use their own names as passwords or easy-to-guess sequences such as “abc123” or “qwerty”. Others use single words like “monkey” or “birthday” that are easy to crack using password-cracking software.

A strong password uses a combination of numbers and letters in a sequence that is difficult for people and computers to guess. The very strongest passwords are seemingly random strings of characters.

If you find it difficult to come up with passwords, there are free tools that can do it for you. Whether it’s a web-based service that enables you to specify a wide variety of parameters. For example, you can choose how long to make the password, whether it should contain special characters, numbers and different letter cases. Perhaps it can also be used to encrypt passwords to make them even stronger.

Passwords for Kids

However, tools with such a variety of options could prove daunting, so we also recommend looking at dinopass.com. It’s meant for children, but the passwords it very quickly generates are suitable for anyone to use. There are only two options - simple or strong. In both cases, pairs of random words are coupled with numbers. The “strong” option substitutes some of the letters for numbers.

DinoPass is successful because it enables you to create passwords that are memorable - and it does it in a simple way. Pairs of words are harder to crack than single words - especially when they’re apparently unrelated.

Devise your own Password

Take two words that have some significance for you and turn that into a passphrase. For example, if you’re a DJ who drives a red car the password could be “redjockeyl”.  Add a memorable number to make it stronger.  For example a family member’s birth year, and it could become; “redjockey64”.  Finally, substitute one or two letters for numbers or other characters to get something like “r3dj0ckey64”.

To anyone else, that will look pretty random - but to you, it’s a password that’s easy to remember and impossible to guess.

Free Password Generator

Another problem is that we have lots of passwords to remember. At least, we should have. Using the same password for every service is never a good idea. If a hacker or thief has access to that one password, they could have access to your entire online life.

You can also use online password management tools, like Norton Identity Safe, which is free to download and you can use on your laptop or your mobile phone. Norton Identity Safe remembers all your passwords for you, and is totally secure. You can use the site’s free password generator to create very strong, complex passwords without having to worry about remembering a single number or letter. Or if you prefer, you can also use the app in combination with your own passwords.

Betrayer: A new FPS by F.E.A.R. and No One Lives Forever developers

Betrayer: A new FPS by F.E.A.R. and No One Lives Forever developers

Betrayer, a new first person shooter, has been announced by Blackpowder Games. The team consists of former Monolith developers, veterans who worked on No One Lives Forever and the original F.E.A.R.

The game's atmosphere has a gloomy and eerie feel to it, taking you back to the 17th century. Events in Betrayer take place in the year 1604, where the player has landed in the New World, in hopes of joining a struggling English colony on the coast of Virginia. However, it seems some mysterious forces have taken over the colony, as the player comes across "only ghosts and mysteries in a land drained of color and life."

The Roanoke colony, one of the colonial history's greatest mysteries, was among the inspirations behind this concept, says creative lead Craig Hubbard. “The social situation of that time was really interesting,” says Hubbard, formerly the lead designer on Shogo: Mobile Armor Division, F.E.A.R., and the NOLF series. “I don’t know if you’ve read about what it was like to be in the Pilgrim colonies, like if you broke the law, but they’d like… pile stones on you until you died. It was just brutal and horrific and that’s great subject matter for an atmospheric and eerie game.”

The job of the player is to delve into the wilderness, look for remaining survivors, find clues and solve these mysteries. To aid players in their quest, are weapons like muskets, axes and crossbows. Along the way, players will come across a mystery women in red, no one knows who she is and why is she helping.

Betrayer will be Blackpowder's first, self-funded project. Hubbard says the game is an effort to make games more "more intuitively," noting "[t]here's a sense of discovery and excitement when you navigate by instinct rather than market research and open yourself up to opportunities that arise during development."

The game will be released via Steam Early Access on August 14 for $15.

Microsoft has decided to drop the price of its Surface Pro tablet by $100.

Microsoft has decided to drop the price of its Surface Pro tablet by $100.
After slashing the price of the Surface RT, Microsoft has now followed on with a similar discount on the Pro model. The firm's second Windows 8 tablet price has been cut to $799 for the 64GB model – a drop of $100.
The 128GB Surface Pro has also been cut by $100 to $899. See also: Microsoft Surface RT price drops in the UK, by 30 percent.
Furthermore, opting for the Surface Pro Bundle (Office Home and Student 2013, a two-year warranty, a Type Cover, Incipio sleeve and a screen protector), costs $309 instead of $478.
These discounts apply in the US, Canada, Hong Kong and Taiwan but not the UK. The tablet still starts at £719 for the 64GB model and £799 for 128GB.
It's unclear whether Microsoft will introduce the discount to the Surface Pro or not. It recently dropped the Surface RT price to £279, a discount of £120.
Microsoft also reported woeful amounts of revenue from the two Surface tablets, just $853 million when a loss of $900 million has already been announced for its Surface RT, put down to 'inventory adjustments'.
The price cuts add to the rumour and speculation that Microsoft will launch new versions of the Surface tablets later this year with Windows 8.1. It's likely that the firm is trying to shift remaining stock of its home-grown device before unveiling their replacements.
Microsoft will be hoping the Surface 2 tablets will be more of a success. Little is known about the gadgets but they will come with a larger range of accessories, according to a leaked roadmap.
