Narendra Modi should be projected as BJP's face in LS polls: Goa CM

Panjim: Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Saturday became the first senior leader in the Bharatiya Janata Party to openly push for projecting his Gujarat counterpart Narendra Modi to be the party’s "face" for the forthcoming General Elections.

Backing Modi, the Goa CM said the Gujarat Chief Minister's projection would give a tremendous boost to the electoral prospects of the party.

Parrikar also heaped praise on Modi for his "administrative capabilities" and "popularity".

Modi's projection should come at least six months ahead of the Lok Sabha polls expected around May next year to give "clarity" to the people of the country who "do not like ambiguity", he told a news agency in an interview here.

Parrikar's open support for Modi came on the sidelines of BJP's three-day National Executive which is expected to discuss the party's roadmap for elections to the Lok Sabha next year and Assemblies of five states prior to that later this year.

"On the basis of public opinion, definitely Modi should be the face of the party. I am not saying he should be declared as the Prime Ministerial candidate. But he has to be the face of the party. This is what I am getting feedback of people...I know what is wrong and what is right," he said.

The Goa Chief Minister said he has got "clear signal" about "public opinion in favour" of Modi because he is in constant touch with the common people.

"I have some communication with the common people and I get clear signal about that (Modi's projection)," Parrikar said.

He added that the decision in this regard has to be taken by the party's top leadership and he will respect that even if his view is not accepted.

Parrikar had two years back described senior party leader LK Advani as "rancid pickle”.

Talking about the National Executive, he said the party should at least announce a schedule about projecting or not projecting any face for the next elections.

"Technically, elections are 10 months away...You (party) should set a timetable... You should decide whether there should be a Prime Minister (candidate), or probable Prime Minister or give signals. You have to set up a schedule for that," he said. The Goa Chief Minister insisted that the projection should be made at least six months before the elections.

"So there are two months still left for that."

Seeking to justify his point, he said, "Considering the psyche of Indian people, a direct or indirect signal should be given...This is my personal opinion."

He cited his own case, wherein he was not declared as the Chief Ministerial candidate but there were "enough signals" about his being the face of the party which enabled it to come to power.

While putting his weight behind Modi, Parrikar said Modi has already passed the "first test of popularity" and dubbed as "secondary" the dispute over his acceptability among allies.

"To form the government, you need to qualify first on popularity and then on numbers. Acceptability is a secondary factor. Acceptability factor comes in only when you get numbers (close to forming the government)," the Chief Minister underlined.

Asked whether Modi has passed that "first test", he replied, "That is what I think."

"Unless you touch 210 (seats in 543-member Lok Sabha) or so, you cannot form the government," he said, expressing confidence that if Modi is projected, the BJP along with "allies who stick" could get more than 220 seats.

He felt Modi's projection would help BJP to "poach" on at least two per cent votes and altogether swing three-four per cent of the votes in favour of BJP.

Parrikar said Modi has given a "good administration" to Gujarat over last 10 years and "this is accepted privately even by Congress leaders."

He, however, indicated that an announcement on Modi may not take place at the on-going conclave as such a crucial decision is not taken at such a large gathering.

"A pre-manthan (churning) will take place in this meeting...380 people are assembled (at National Executive). Such a large gathering cannot take such a decision. It has to be taken by the small group which will take decision on the basis of feedback from this group," he said.

Parrikar’s statement indicates the growing clout of Modi, who got a thumbs up from many BJP leaders as far as the road to the Lok Sabha polls is concerned.

On Friday, Parrikar had said: "Modi can catapult BJP to power. He will take us closer to government formation at the centre."

Parrikar’s statements on Modi had drawn criticism from the Nationalist Congress Party, which accused the Goa Chief Minister of doublespeak, and asked why was the Gujarat Chief Minister, if he had so much potential, not allowed to campaign in Goa in March 2012.

The BJP's national executive and national council meets are being held at the Goa Marriott resort. The three-day conclave started on Friday.

Thousands join Turkey protests defying PM

Istanbul: Thousands of angry Turks took to the streets today to join mass anti-government protests, defying Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's call to end the worst civil unrest of his decade-long rule.

From the early morning, protesters began arriving in Istanbul's Taksim Square with food and blankets to settle in for a weekend of demonstrations, adding to the growing tent city in nearby Gezi Park.

"A week ago, I could never imagine myself sleeping out on the streets of Istanbul," said 22-year old Aleyna, wrapped up under a blanket with a stray kitten, pointing to her dirty clothes. "Now I don't know how I can ever go back."

Fresh demonstrations were also planned in the capital Ankara as the unrest entered its ninth day.

Turkey's combative premier yesterday called for an immediate end to the protests, saying his Islamic-rooted government was open to "democratic demands" but insisting that the protests were "bordering on vandalism."

The political turmoil erupted after police cracked down heavily on a small campaign to save Gezi Park from demolition, spiralling into nationwide demos against Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party (AKP), seen as increasingly authoritarian.

Police have used tear gas and water cannon to disperse demonstrators in clashes that have injured thousands of people and left three dead, tarnishing Turkey's image as a model of Islamic democracy.

Faced with international criticism of his handling of the crisis, Erdogan yesterday accused Western allies of double standards after EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule urged a "swift and transparent" probe into police abuses in Turkey, a longtime EU hopeful.

Erdogan issued a sharp retort, saying those involved in a similar protest would "face a harsher response" in any European country.

The premier, who has dismissed the demonstrators as "a few looters" manipulated by extremists, added in a more conciliatory tone: "I'm open-hearted to anyone with democratic demands."

But demonstrators dug in their heels overnight, with thousands massing peacefully in festive Taksim, while others took to the streets in other Turkish cities, banging pots and pans as they marched in protest.

Taksim has been free of a police presence since officers relinquished the square to protesters last Saturday after the government acknowledged it was their heavy-handed response that lit the flame of the unrest.

In a quiet night nationwide, one only Istanbul suburb saw fresh clashes, with police using tear gas and water cannon on protesters who reportedly threw fireworks and homemade bombs at them.

2013 French Open: Rafael Nadal to face David Ferrer in final

Paris: Rafael Nadal will face compatriot David Ferrer in the final of the 2013 French Open as he bids for a record eight title at Roland Garros on Sunday.

The 27-year-old defending champion defeated Novak Djokovic in a gruelling five-set thriller on Friday to book a place in the final. On the other hand, Ferrer faced no such resistance from Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and after 41 previous attempts, finally made it to the final of a Grand Slam event.

Ferrer has met Nadal 23 times before out of which he has emerged victorious in only four. He first met Nadal way back in 2004 when he won the first of his four matches.

The statistics aren’t in the favour of the 31-year-old who hasn’t dropped a set in the tournament this year. However, Nadal believes that taking Ferrer lightly will only spell trouble.

“He`s a player that if you are not playing perfect, you will be in big, big trouble. He didn`t lose a set during the whole tournament, so he`s a player that brings you to the limit," Nadal was quoted as saying in media reports.

Nadal, till date, has only been defeated by Robin Soderling at Roland Garros. He has just one defeat in 59 matches.

Ferrer knows the enormity of the task he faces on Sunday.

"Defeating Rafa is very difficult on any surface; it`s even worse on clay. But once again, I`m going to try to play a beautiful match," he said.

‘US intelligence agency monitoring emails in India'

New Delhi: India is reportedly one of the top five countries being thoroughly monitored by US foreign surveillance agency National Security Agency (NSA), a UK newspaper has reported.

India is placed fifth on the list with 6.3 billion pieces of intelligence being recorded from computer networks in March this year, the Guardian stated, as per a newspaper report.

Iran was placed on the top of the list with 14 billion pieces of intelligence collected, Pakistan came close second with 13.5 billion followed by Jordan, and Egypt with 12.7 billion and 7.6 billion respectively in March, the report states.

The monitoring is a part of US government’s data surveillance programme initiated to prevent terrorist attacks. US President Barack Obama has defended the newly revealed government surveillance programmes as a small price to pay for keeping America safe from terror attacks.

He acknowledged that the public may be uncomfortable with the broad reach of the formerly secret programmes, but he said he believed the government had struck the right balance between the need to fight terrorism and the need to protect privacy.

"You can't have 100 percent security and then also have 100 percent privacy and zero inconvenience," Obama was quoted as saying by the New York Times.

Sweeping up Americans' telephone records and monitoring Internet activity from overseas are "modest encroachments on privacy" that can help US intelligence analysts disrupt terror activity, he said.
