How to Turn Off Fade and Pop-Up Animated Effects in Mac OS X

How to Turn Off Fade and Pop-Up Animated Effects in Mac OS X

Call me a cynic, but it feels like OS X is a little showy with its visual effects. Dialog boxes and some program windows pop onto the screen from nowhere. This design mirrors the iPod and iPad user experience. On a larger screen, however, the effect can be unsettling.

Wouldn’t it be nice if things just appeared on screen with no fuss, like they did in the good old days? Here’s how you can turn off the majority of OS X’s visual effects. Pop-Up Windows and Dialogs To turn off dialog boxes and windows that spring out from the middle of the screen, open a Terminal window (FinderApplicationsUtilitiesTerminal) and type the following:

defaults write -g NSAutomaticWindowAnimationsEnabled -bool FALSE

Then log out and back in again for the changes to take effect. To restore the effect, open a Terminal window and type the following, logging out and back in again afterward to make the changes take effect:

 defaults delete -g NSAutomaticWindowAnimationsEnabled

Quick Look windows appear when you select a file and hit Space . They show a preview of the file’s contents. You can stop Quick Look windows from springing up from the file in question by typing the following into a Terminal window (this change will also remove the effect of the Quick Look window shrinking back into the file):

defaults write com.apple.finder QLPanelAnimationDuration -int 0;killall Finder

The change will take effect immediately. To restore the effect, open a Terminal window and type the following (again, the change will take effect immediately):

defaults delete com.apple.finder QLPanelAnimationDuration;killall Finder

 Mission Control

To turn off  the Mission Control  zoom effects that  appear whenever it’s activated and deactivated, open a Terminal window and type the following:

 defaults write com.apple.dock expose-animation-duration -int 0;killall Dock

The changes take effect immediately. Note that this also removes the animated effect of windows zooming out of the way when Show Desktop is activated (usually via the “finger spread” trackpad gesture). To revert to the default animated Mission Control effects, open a Terminal window and type the following:

defaults delete com.apple.dock expose-animation-duration;killall Dock

File and Print Dialog Boxes

To stop the Save and Print dialog boxes from sliding out and down from the title bar of each application, open a Terminal window and type the following:

defaults write -g NSWindowResizeTime -float 0.01

You’ll need to log out and in again for the changes to take effect. If you wish to reintroduce the visual effects at a later date, type the following, logging out and back in again afterward for the changes to take effect:

 defaults delete -g NSWindowResizeTime

Launchpad

A hidden setting can be tweaked to make Launchpad appear and disappear instantly. To activate it, open a Terminal window (FinderApplications UtilitiesTerminal) and type the following two lines, hitting Return  after each:

defaults write com.apple.dock springboard-show-duration -int 0

 defaults write com.apple.dock springboard-hide-duration -int 0;killall Dock

The changes take effect instantly. To revert to the previous animated effect, open a Terminal window again and type the following two lines:

 defaults delete com.apple.dock springboard-show-duration

defaults delete com.apple.dock springboard-hide-duration;killall Dock

You can also reduce the amount of time the individual app list pages of Launchpad take to scroll in and out. Open a Terminal window and type the following if you want the pages to slide in and out instantly:

defaults write com.apple.dock springboard-page-duration -int 0;killall Dock

The changes take effect immediately. To revert back to the default, open a Terminal window and type the following:

 defaults delete com.apple.dock springboard-page-duration;killall Dock

Dock

The Dock can be hidden so that it slides off the screen when not being used. This saves a little screen space. Nudging the cursor against the edge of the screen where the Dock is normally positioned will make it slide back into view again. To turn this feature on or off, right-click the dashed lines between the main Dock icons and the stacks and select Turn Hiding On or Turn Hiding Off.

To make the Dock instantly leap back into view when it’s needed, rather than slide, open a Terminal window and type the following:

 defaults write com.apple.dock autohide-time-modifier -int 0;killall Dock

To revert back to the default sliding effect, open a Terminal window and type the following:

defaults delete com.apple.dock autohide-time-modifier;killall Dock

Disciplinary committee has made mockery of proceedings: Modi

New Delhi: Former IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi on Tuesday came down heavily on the three-member Disciplinary Committee, probing alleged irregularities against him, saying the panel has made a "mockery of the proceedings".

The committee, after recording versions of lawyers representing Modi and the BCCI, said it is likely to give its recommendations to the BCCI by the end of May.

"In hurry to conclude, committee has made mockery of the proceedings. My lawyers wanted one session each to deal with 12 issues," Modi tweeted.

"They have made this enquiry - A SHAM EXERCISE A whole New ways to do Judicial inquiry," he wrote on his twitter handle.

A legal team representing Modi has objected to "undue haste" by the Committee, and he sought to bring it to light.

"Looks like everything is predetermined. What is the undue haste for. Why this hurry. What are they afraid of. Possibly the truth," Modi said.

Directing his ire at the Cricket Board, Modi said, "Even if BCCI were to read headings of documents it would have taken 2 full days to only read heading of those documents.

"Three show cause notices running in 150 pages, my reply running in 15000 pages, live evidence record running into 2000 pages.

"Amazing how BCCI lawyers yesterday took only 40 minutes to argue its full case against me."

Commenting further against the board, Modi said, "BCCI dictates that no member or administrator gives evidence to bring out the truth.

"The persons who wish to appear on my behalf are stopped by BCCI acting under instruction of its President - Srinivasan.

"My application to examine witnesses in defence is not allowed by the committee."

Modi also took potshots at Arun Jaitley Arun Jaitley, one of the three members in the Disciplinary Committee.

"While suit against bias of Arun Jaitley is pending in court, he shows undue haste 2 close proceedings so that I cannot have legal remedy," he wrote.

"Let me tell the truth of these proceedings. The fact that Arun Jaitley was the original complainant in the BCCI was suppressed from me," Modi said.

He said the committee was scared to face him.

"I am not afraid to face the committee, but looks like committee is afraid to face me. And from my legal team.

"The inquiry was instituted against me but looks like the committee does not wish to hear my version," Modi said.

Modi`s legal team had earlier accused the Disciplinary Committee of ignoring its request to present its defence in the case.

"I am constrained to note the working of the committee. It declined to give Modi a chance to present his case via video link. The committee has already refused to take Modi`s response to show-cause notices issued to him saying it was 32 hours late," said Mehmood M Abdi, General Counsel and Constituted Attorney of Modi.

BCCI recommends Kohli, Gavaskar for government awards

Mumbai: The Cricket Board (BCCI) has recommended the names of young batsman Virat Kohli for the prestigious Arjuna award and former captain Sunil Gavaskar for the Dhyanchand lifetime achievement honour to the sports ministry.

Confirming this, BCCI sources said that on Tuesday was the last date for recommending the awards to the sports ministry.

"We have recommended only these two names," the sources informed making it clear that no cricketer`s name has been recommended for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award this year.

Gavaskar, the only Indian cricketer recently named by former England umpire Dickie Bird in his select World Test XI, retired from the game in 1987 after a glorious 16-year-long career during which he became the first in the world to score 10,000 Test runs.

In all, he played in 125 Tests and was a member of the victorious Indian World Cup winning team led by Kapil Dev in 1983 and then led the country to another major one-day title, the World Championship of Cricket in Australia two years later.

Gavaskar, who will turn 64 on July 10, is currently a television commentator and a columnist.

TOSS: MSD has won the toss and he has decided to bat first.

Albie Morkel replaces Dirk Nannes and Suman comes in for Mithun Manhas.

With 7 wins from 9 matches, Chennai Super Kings have once again become a force to reckon with in the Indian Premier League. They are there right on the top of the table courtesy the incredible form of Michael Hussey who was dropped for one match but since then has scored big knocks getting his side to good starts. Wriddhiman Saha who replaced Murali Vijay in the previous match played a short but impactful innings and only if Dirk Nannes can get back into his rhythm, there is no reason why CSK cannot register another convincing victory.

Pune skipper Aaron Finch has been in good form as a result of which he was handed over the captaincy and since then he has put some good shows with the bat. Luke Wright has done a decent job as an all-rounder, so has Mitchell Marsh and these two will have to click together in case if the hosts entertain any hopes of defeating their mighty opponent in front of the home crowd. Meanwhile the team management would want the underrated Steven Smith to score a big knock in the crucial encounter.
