live cricket match scores

Ahmedabad: Pragyan Ojha snapped up five wickets to give India a mammoth 330-run lead before England staged a spirited fightback in the second innings to give themselves a slight hope of saving the first cricket Test here on Saturday.

England were bundled out for 191 in the first innings with Ojha taking five for 45 while Ravichandran Ashwin took three wickets, prompting India to enforce the follow-on.

But the script changed remarkably in the second innings as skipper Alastair Cook (74 batting) and Nick Compton (34 batting) steered England to 111 for no loss at close on an eventful third day with the visitors still trailing by 219 runs.

With two full days left in the match, India still hold the advantage of going 1-0 up in the four-match series. England will have to bat out of their skin to save the game on a Sardar Patel track that appears to be getting slower.

The visitors showed better application in the second innings, after India, who scored a massive 521 for eight declared, asked them to follow-on.

Left-arm spinner Ojha claimed his career`s fourth five-wicket haul with figures of five for 45 in 22.2 overs in his 17th Test while Ashwin grabbed three for 80 in 27 overs.

Starting the second innings after an early tea, Cook and debutant Compton, who was out for nine in the first innings, put on an unbeaten century stand to give England a fine start in their quest for avoiding an innings defeat.

Neither Ojha, nor his off-spin partner Ashwin, could pose as many problems to the English openers in the second essay as they did in the first.

The spinners, especially Ashwin, also bowled a lot flatter and did not stick to a consistent line of attack on a wicket that became more and more placid as the game progressed.

PTI

England still have a huge task on hand and their first job on Sunday would be to wipe out the first-innings deficit.

The manner in which Cook and Compton negotiated the Indian bowlers, in stark contrast to what they did in the first, holds some hope for the visitors.

England, who started the day at 41 for three, were pushed to the brink before they adjourned for the lunch break at 110 for seven. They fought back for a brief while through Matt Prior (48) and Tim Bresnan (19).

Prior was the last man out when he lost his off stump to Ojha.

Prior's was the top score of the innings with only captain Cook, who scored 41, being the only other batsman to cross 40 in a pathetic display.

Prior, who had come to the wicket at the fall of Ian Bell with the total reading a miserable 69 for five, played with positive intent.

Bresnan faced 112 balls and hit a couple of boundaries, and showed better application than most of the front-line batsmen.

India shuffled their bowlers constantly and Ojha got the breakthrough by dismissing Bresnan and then followed it up with the wicket of Prior after Zaheer got his only wicket of the innings, trapping Stuart Broad leg before.

In the morning, Ojha picked up two wickets off successive balls while Ashwin and medium pacer Umesh Yadav shared the other two to leave the tourists 411 runs behind India's first innings total at the end of first session.

Ojha packed off a nervous-looking Kevin Pietersen (17) and a clueless Bell (0) at the same score of 69 while Ashwin broke through the defense of Cook eleven runs later.

Watching videos of past knocks helped me: Sehwag

Ahmedabad: Relieved at scoring his first Test century in almost two years, Virender Sehwag said that watching replays of some of his big knocks of the past helped him in reaching the three-figure mark in the first Test against England on Thursday.

"I have to thank my video analyst Dhananjay. We watched the videos of my past innings where I got hundreds till 11 pm last night. I saw that when I played the first ten overs cautiously I had reached 100. I did the same today," Sehwag, who slammed a run-a-ball 117 with 16 fours and a six, said after the first day`s play.

Sehwag put on a 134-run opening stand with Gautam Gambhir (45) before adding another 90 runs for the second wicket with Cheteshwar Pujara, who remained unbeaten on 98 at close, as India reached 323 for four at stumps on day one.

"I am happy to get a hundred after one-and-a-half to two years. I did not have any doubt (about my ability to score a ton). You people had," said Sehwag, taking a dig at the media.

Comparing his previous 173-run knock against New Zealand at this venue in 2010, Sehwag said the wicket on the previous occasion was very good for batting.

Sehwag credited both Gambhir and Pujara for complementing his efforts but insisted that the Sardar Patel stadium track at Motera was too slow and the Indian bowlers will have a hard task in hand to take 20 English wickets to enforce a win.

"Gambhir played well and we gave the team a very good start. Pujara also batted very well. He has patience and hit the loose balls. He knows his batting best. He should complete his century tomorrow.

"But the wicket is very slow and shot making is not easy. Our bowlers will have to really bowl very well to take 20 England wickets," said Sehwag.

Asked if the match could be considered as good as over for England, Sehwag said, "England are not Bangladesh. They are a good side. Their batsmen would not throw away their wickets. We would like to bat till tea (tomorrow).”

"The wicket will turn tomorrow. There is some help for the spinners. But the bowler needs to be patient," he insisted.

Lunch Report

At Lunch India were 410 for the loss of 4 wickets with Pujara batting on 133* and Yuvraj on 72*. India will feel content that they did not lose any wickets in the first session of the 2nd day although they did not match up to the rate at which runs were scored yesterday. The highlight of the innings was Pujara who scored his second career century. Yuvraj Singh also got to his half century which included some powerful shots.

England bowlers toiled hard and appealed even harder but with no success. Swann caused a few problems initially for both batsmen but was unable to take wickets. Anderson also bowled well in patches but could not keep up the pressure on the Indian batsmen.

INDIA: Over: 121 II Score: 410/4(1st innings)

INDIA: Over: 110 II Score: 382/4(1st innings)

Anderson and Samit Patel bowling well in tandem.

Yuvraj and Pujara have denied England early wickets although they have not scored at a brisk pace.

Pujara: 123*, Pujara: 54*

Yuvraj gets to his fifty. Heaves Samit Patel’s delivery wide of deep mid wicket for a boundary.

INDIA: Over: 106 II Score: 367/4(1st innings)

Runs have been hard to come by for India. England are bowling well.

Indian batsmen survived a few scares.

Pujara and Yuvraj have shown good application.

Pujara:115*, Yuvraj: 47*

INDIA: Over: 100 II Score: 360/4(1st innings)

Broad trying the short one on Yuvraj. The pitch is too slow for the short ball to be effective though. Yuvraj pulls one to the deep mid wicket fence.

Pujara has been offering his pads to a few deliveries. There have been a few huge appeals against him.

Pujara: 113*, Yuvraj: 42*

INDIA: Over: 95 II Score: 345/4(1st innings)

Fifteen runs off the last over from Swann. Pujara hit him for a boundary to get to his century and then Yuvraj smashed him for a six and a four.

Pujara: 105*, Yuvraj: 35*

Cheteswar Pujara has scored a century. This has been a fantastic knock from him.

Ahmedabad: India finished Day 1 at 323 for the loss of 4 wickets. They would be satisfied with the overall performance. Pujara (98*) and Yuvraj (24*) are the overnight batsmen and they would ideally look to bat for two more sessions so that they put up a big first innings total.

England on the other hand would be looking to pick up a few quick wickets. The second new ball is still just 3 overs old so they would be looking to make full use of it and trouble the Indian batsmen. Swann will again be their main bowler and England`s fortunes will depend to a large extent on how the champion spinner performs.

Bangladesh vs West Indies: Chanderpaul slams double century on Day 2

End of Day 2: BANGLADESH: Over: 36 II Score: 164/3 (1st innings)

Naeem Islam 27* and Shakib Al Hasan 16* have managed to stick around and build a decent partnership. Bangladesh got off to a quick start largely due to Tamim Iqbal’s quickfire 72 off 71 balls. Runs did dry up a bit after his dismissal. Bangladesh would like to have the same pair on the field for a considerable part of day 3 for them to get anywhere close to the West Indian total. Ravi Rampaul was the pick of the bowlers for the tourists with figures of 2 for 49.

BANGLADESH: Over: 25 II Score: 120/3 (1st innings)

Bangladesh have lost Tamim Iqbal for 72 off 71 balls. Hits a wide ball straight into the hands of mid-on. Shakib Al Hasan has replaced Tamim. Runs have dried up ever since Tamim fell.

Tamim Iqbal c Narine b Sammy 72 (71b 10x4 2x6)

BANGLADESH: Over: 15 II Score: 110/2 (1st innings)

Nafees has been dismissed caught behind off the bowling of Rampaul for 31 runs. He was looking really good in the middle. Tamim Iqbal however continues unabated and is on 67* runs. He has hit ten fours and two massive sixes off Sunil Narine. Naeem Islam has joined Iqbal in the middle.

Shahriar Nafees c Ramdin b Rampaul 31 (27b 7x4 0x6)

BANGLADESH: Over: 10 II Score: 66/1 (1st innings)

The loss of Siddique’s wicket has not affected Tamim Iqbal much. He continues to hit some glorious boundaries and is batting on 41* off 32 balls with eight hits to the fence. Nafees is batting on 14* off 14 balls with three boundaries. The best part about the partnership has been that they have played proper cricketing shots and have found the gaps to perfection.

BANGLADESH: Over: 5 II Score: 25/1 (1st innings)

Tamim Iqbal and Junaid Siddique are opening the innings for Bangladesh. Ravi Rampaul and Tino Best have taken the new ball. They are bowling at a good pace. Bangladesh managed to be quite positive in the first five overs. Tamim Iqbal in particular played some wonderful shots through cover and has already hit boundaries. Siddique was dismissed by Rampaul caught at second slip. Shahriar Nafees replaces him the middle.

Junaid Siddique c Bravo b Rampaul 7 (14b 1x4 0x6)
WEST INDIES: Over: 144 II Score: 527/4 (1st innings)

Shivnarine Chanderpaul has got to his double century and West Indies have declared. Chanderpaul remained unbeaten at 203*and Ramdin scored 126*. Bangladesh have a very tough task ahead of them.

WEST INDIES: Over: 136 II Score: 488/4 (1st innings)

Ramdin has completed his century and Chanderpaul has moved on to 187*. Bangladesh spinners are looking completely out of ideas. The two batsmen are looking very comfortable in the middle.

At Lunch

WEST INDIES: Over: 118 II Score: 437/4 (1st innings)

Chanderpaul is batting on 156* and Ramdin is on 84*. West Indies look all set for a huge first innings total.

ive cricket match between India and England

INDIA: Over: 10 II Score: 42/0(1st innings)

Sehwag is beginning to show glimpses of his class. Three elegant boundaries off Anderson in the seventh over.

Now Gambhir gets one through covers for two runs. He has been very watchful and has looked very solid with his defence this morning.

The Indian duo seem to have got the measure of the English opening bowlers. Probably time for Cook to think of getting a spinner into the attack.

A bowling change. The tall and lanky Tim Bresnan replaces Anderson.

Broad continues from the other end. Surprising to see just one slip in place. There goes the short ball, and Sehwag dabs it to square leg for a single.

Gambhir gets a boundary towards deep square leg. Gambhir likes it on the pads and Broad would do better to stay away from that area.

INDIA: Over: 5 II Score: 15/0(1st innings)
list 2: James Anderson and Stuart Broad bowling a nice and tight line and length. Not much swing on offer for any of the bowlers. That should make the Indian openers feel a lot better.

Sehwag shows his class with a beautiful cover drive which races to the boundary.

Gambhir gets an inside edge on an Anderson delivery which misses the stumps by a whisker.

Sehwag flicks one off his hips towards fine leg for a four.
Sehwag is looking to play the ball on its merit. He has not played any rash strokes but has not missed out on the loose deliveries.
Session 1: Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag are out in the middle. James Anderson to start proceedings for England. There has been a lot of uncertainty over how the pitch will behave. It will be interesting to see if Anderson gets some swing and how the Indian openers handle it

Toss: India have won the toss and have elected to bat first.

England (Playing XI): Alastair Cook(c), Nick Compton, Jonathan Trott, Kevin Pietersen, Ian Bell, Matt Prior(w), Samit Patel, Tim Bresnan, Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, James Anderson

India (Playing XI): Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Cheteshwar Pujara, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni(w/c), Ravichandran Ashwin, Zaheer Khan, Umesh Yadav, Pragyan Ojha

Billed as the revenge series, India would aim to pay England back in the same coin when the two teams renew cricketing rivalry when they go into what promises to be an engrossing four-match Test rubber here from Thursday.

WEST INDIES: Over: 90 II Score: 361/4 (1st innings)

West Indies’ Kieron Powell and Shivnarine Chanderpaul scored a century apiece on the opening day of the first Test against Bangladesh in Mirpur on Tuesday. Debutant offie Sohag Gazi was launched for a biggie by Chris Gayle as he began the proceedings of the day but later would have returned happy after taking three wickets. AT stumps Chanderpaul (123) and Ramdin (52) were still batting for the visitors.

WEST INDIES: Over: 57 II Score: 211/3 (1st innings)

Opener Kieran Powell has completed his century on the first day of the first Test against Bangladesh in Mirpur on Tuesday. Batting alongside the leftie is another southpaw and West Indian veteran Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Both of them have now added 105 runs for the fourth wicket.

WEST INDIES: Over: 38 II Score: 134/3

Kieran Powell has completed his fifty and is currently batting on 62(120b, 4X8, 6X1) along with Shivnarine Chanderpaul (5*). The last wicket to fall was that of Marlon Samuels who was caught by Gazi off Shahadat Hossain. He scored 16(41b, 4X3).

The first of the two Test matches between Bangladesh and West Indies has begun in Mirpur. The touring party led by Darren Sammy won the toss on Tuesday electing to bat first.

The visitors have lost two wickets both falling to Sohag Gazi. The first one to depart was Chris Gayle who was caught by Mahmadullah while the second one to fall was left-hander Darren Bravo caught by Rubel Hossain. Gayle scored 24 (17b, 2X4, 2X6) while Bravo left after 14 (28b, 3X4).

WEST INDIES: Over: 1 II Score: 18/0

WHAT AN ELECTRIC START TO THE FIRST TEST! Opener Chris Gayle stunned debutant spinner Sohag Gazil with a six off the first ball of the match over long on. He then repeated the act with the fourth ball of the over disappearing into the stands. A total of 18 runs came in the first over.

Gabba Test: Kallis, de Villiers ensure no dramatic end to final day

SCORECARD »
Brisbane: The first cricket Test between Australia and South Africa at the Gabba ended in a draw with the Proteas' on 166 for five in their second innings before stumps were called on the final day.

Michael Hussey (100) brought up his 16th Test century early Tuesday, before Australia declared before lunch on 565 for five with captain and man of the match Michael Clarke unbeaten on 259.

Ed Cowan (136) too scored a hundred.

South Africa had made 450 in the first innings, thanks to Hashim Amla (104) and Jacques Kallis (147).

South Africa: Over: 68 II Score: 166/5 (2nd innings)

Handshakes all around as the first Test between Australia and South Africa at Gabba has ended in a draw. Michael Clarke had declared the Australian innings at 565/5 taking a lead of 115. After giving some early blows to the Proteas, who were one player short, there was some hope that the match might produce a result. However, first innings centurion Jacques Kallis (49) and AB de Villiers staved off the charging Aussie blowers to ensure that the match ends in a draw. No prizes for guessing who the man of the match is - double centurion Michael Clarke.

TEA: SOUTH AFRICAOver: 38 II Score: 114/3

The first Test match is heading for a draw after Kallis and De Villiers stemmed the flow of wickets. Remember – SA only have six wickets remaining in their second dig owing to the fact that JP Duminy is out of the entire series due to injury.

Australian captain Michael Clarke declared the first innings at 565/5 after the hosts had taken a lead of 115 runs over South Africa.

They dismissed three early Proteas batsmen to set the Test match alive after it seemed headed for a likely draw.

Clarke ended unbeaten on 259 giving away a chance of scoring another triple ton with Mathew Wade on 19.

Alvrio Peterson, captain Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla were the three South African wickets to fall with two of them going to James Pattinson.

Australian captain Michael Clarke registered his third double century of the year to lead his team out of troubled waters on the penultimate day of the Gabba Test on Monday.

At stumps, Clarke was batting on 218 (350b, 21X4) along with Mr. Cricket Michael Hussey (86*) as the hosts were leading South Africa by 37 runs with six wickets in hand.

Australia (1st innings) Overs: 116.2 II Score: 458/4

Australian captain Michael Clarke has completed his double century against South Africa with a double. He is currently batting on 200 (335b, 19X4). Batting with him is another Michael who is on 75.

Australia (1st innings) Overs: 115 II Score: 453/4

Australia were in complete charge of the first Test after they surpassed the South African total as Michael Clarke (196*) and Michael Hussey (74*) continued to pile on the runs. The only success for the visitors has come in the form of Ed Cowan who departed after scoring his maiden Test ton.

Australia (1st innings) Overs: 87 II Score: 306/4

Nearing Tea, Ed Cowan lost his wicket via a run out while backing up. The lefty scored his debut Test century and scored 136 (257b, 4X17) before being run out by Dale Steyn. On the other hand, Michael Clarke completed a century of his own and rescued the Australian innings adding 259 runs with Cowan.

Australia recovered from the early blows they suffered at the hands of South African bowlers on the third day as opener Ed Cowan and skipper Michael Clarke continued to frustrate them on the penultimate day of the first Test at Gabba on Monday.

Cowan completed his maiden Test century after lunch while Clarke was nearing on his ton of his own. Together they have added 200 runs for the fourth wicket.

England draw third practice game as well

Ahmedabad: Jonathan Trott notched up a hundred before England knocked out six Haryana wickets but their third and final practice match ahead of the Test series against India ended in a tame draw on the last day here on Sunday.

Haryana were 133 for six in 42 overs, chasing 441, when the match was stopped.

Resuming at 73 for two after tea, opener Nitin Saini completed a half century before becoming Monty Panesar`s only victim of the day when the left-arm spinner had him caught behind after an 84-ball stay.

Saini struck nine fours during his entertaining knock but the rest of the Haryana line-up failed to impress and pacer Tim Bresnan picked up two wickets to finish with a five-wicket haul in the match.

Earlier, England had useful batting practice ahead of their first cricket Test against India starting November 15, as they declared their second innings at 254 for six to take an overall 441-run lead.

England declared midway into the second session as soon as star batsman and first innings centurion Kevin Pitersen was out for a two-ball duck of the bowling of off-spinner Jayant Yadav.Opener Jonathon Trott struck a century as England reached 221 for two at lunch to extend their lead to 408 runs.Trott, overnight 61, retired after scoring 101 to give batting practice to his other colleagues in England`s final tour game before the first Test.Captain Alastair Cook, who was batting on 2, then ended their innings at 254 for six.The visitors added 33 runs to their lunch score of 221 for two. Opener Nitin Saini was going strong on 42 while Sunny Singh was giving him company on 11.After resuming the day at 118 for no loss, England added 103 runs in 26 overs in the morning session at a healthy run rate of just a fraction less than four per over.Haryana bowlers had to toil hard for the second time in the match, having allowed England to pile on 521 in the visitors` first innings.

Time running out for Duncan Fletcher as coach of the Indian team

Eighteen months ago, when Duncan Fletcher was appointed as the coach of the Indian cricket team, he was expected to fill a huge void created by the exit of Gary Kirsten. The latter had set such high standards for himself, as well as the team; to emulate that would require an enormous effort. Nevertheless, Fletcher had the reputation of transforming even mediocre sides into formidable units, and it was expected that he’d nonchalantly fit into the shoes. Moreover, the Indians were newly-crowned World Cup champions when Fletcher took over, and all that was expected of him was to keep the momentum going.

India, under Fletcher’s reign, began cautiously. After the World Cup triumph, India’s first away tour was against the West Indies, where they won the Tests 1-0 and the One-Day International (ODI) series 3-2. A better performance was expected, but considering the fact that a few key players weren’t available, it was a noteworthy effort.

Then began the downward slide; India were whitewashed in England and Australia — eight consecutive away Tests losses. The only consolation was a victory over West Indies at home. Nonetheless, only superficial changes were made and the head honchos decided to wait for things to sort themselves out.

The decline was evident even in the ODI arena, notwithstanding wins at home against England and West Indies. The World Champions crashed out of the Asia Cup following a loss to a relatively weaker Bangladesh side. Such was the slump that India couldn’t guard itself away from home.

The table below reveals India’s performance overseas in all formats of the game under Fletcher’s reign:

The decline is appalling, since a similar unit under Kirsten’s tenure registered Win Percentages of 42.85, 58.53 and 50, respectively, in Tests, ODIs and T20s overseas.

Fletcher has done a commendable thing by not hogging the limelight as a coach, but is this tight-lipped approach really helping? Kirsten wasn’t a man of many words either, but the fact that he was constantly at work behind the scenes was well known. Most importantly, the results on the field reflected that. However, the same cannot be said about Fletcher. Nevertheless, he’s got the backing of the current players and that cannot be discounted. Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni too has often been optimistic of Fletcher. “He’s a great guy to have. It's not like he has become the coach and we have lost two series and he's to be blamed for all the defeats, it's up to the 11 players to go out and perform,” Dhoni said post the Australian debacle.

However, there is the other side too. A few former cricketers never recommended Fletcher’s appointment as coach right from the very beginning. Sunil Gavaskar reckoned an Indian coach would do a better job, whereas Kapil Dev went one step ahead and said, “Who is Duncan Fletcher? I don't remember much of him as a player. I would like to see (Venkatesh) Prasad and Robin (Singh) as coaches of the Indian team. Not because they are Indians but because they did a great job at the T20 World Cup in 2007." If anything, their opinions on Fletcher would’ve only gotten stronger now. Former Australian cricketer Marcus North too stated in his column that Fletcher has managed to undo all of Kirsten’s hard work.
The upcoming series against England will be yet another litmus test for Fletcher, and albeit there are lesser chances of things going haywire since India is playing at home, a below-par performance will only result in voices against him gaining in momentum. Also, it’s important to note that Fletcher was appointed as coach during April 2011 with a two-year contract, and hence there is not enough time left to turn things around. Thus far, the ship has been heading in the opposite direction, and it remains to be seen if Fletcher can play his part henceforth and finally deliver.
